Hope is not a Strategy

Relying solely on hope as a strategy for ensuring the safety and security of congregants is not only inadequate but also irresponsible. In today's world, where threats to safety can arise unexpectedly, church leaders have a moral obligation to take proactive measures to protect those who attend services or participate in ministry events. This means actively prioritizing the implementation of robust safety and security protocols. Members and guests of a church community should not only be safe but also feel safe. They should have the assurance that their well-being is being actively safeguarded, just as it would be in other public spaces like schools, malls, or entertainment venues. However, there's a tendency for individuals to perceive churches as inherently safe environments, possibly leading them to let their guard down. This misconception heightens the importance of churches and ministries ensuring they have the necessary measures in place to address potential threats.

This is where the appointment of qualified individuals to oversee safety and security becomes crucial. These individuals should possess the expertise and training to assess risks, develop comprehensive security plans, and implement appropriate measures to mitigate potential dangers. They should also be equipped to train staff and volunteers in emergency response protocols and ensure ongoing preparedness through regular drills and evaluations.

Essential Components of Church Safety & Security

First, we need to build our team. Here are some of the things we will include in our discussions as time allows:

  • Helping you get stakeholders and leadership on board with a program to include natural and man made disasters.
  • Assessing the needs of your facility and congregation - building a plan that works for you.
  • Discussion of active shooter events and mitigation training based on a variety of scenarios.
  • Designing a detailed church security plan by identifying your risk management data.
  • Define routine procedures to secure the church on a daily basis that includes ancillary teams (Greeters, etc.).
  • Conduct team building exercises for an internal culture that’s free of communication bottlenecks (range and medical days).
  • How to choose (and simplify) equipment for the task at hand including firearms and related gear, communications equipment, first aid, CPR/AED and basic trauma kits, and other safety interrelated items.
  • We work side by side with you to come up with the most efficient and effective security plans for your house of worship.

Second, we train our team, staff, and other leadership for medical emrgencies. This CPR/AED/Basic Trauma Workshop is a one day course that will expose the Church Safety Team Member to Basic First Aid, CRP/AED use, and Basic Trauma Care; like learning to use a tourniquet, basic triage, and getting CPR Certified. Here are some of the topics presented in these hands-on Basic Trauma and CPR/AED Workshops:

  • Components of the Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK)
  • Hands On Training of the IFAK
  • Basic and Advanced Airway Management
  • Treatment of a Sucking Chest Wound
  • Airway Adjunct Devices
  • Basic First Aid
  • Advanced Wound Care
  • Application Of Hemostatic Agents and Bandages
  • Application of Tourniquets
  • Recognition and Treatment of various Injuries (gunshot, burns, lacerations, orthopedic, environmental)
  • Treatment of Hypovolemic (hemorrhagic) Shock
  • 911 and Police Protocols
  • and more including a CPR Certification.

Third, we have to get serious about building physical skills in the unfortunate event lethal force is required. Concealed Carry classes are licensing classes, not training classes.As responsible armed team members, we should realize that a needed skill we have not trained for isn't going to suddenly manifest itself in our time of need. We have to have a clear understanding of our capabilities and understand that physical skills degrade without continued training.

The preliminary defensive firearms training event is a one day course that will expose the Church Safety Team Member to all the core principles and fundamentals of the Intuitive Defensive® Shooting Program in the context of a Church Safety Team Member or Church Security Officer responding to a lethal threat.

This course will cover the basics of intuitive defensive shooting, Defensive Accuracy, The Balance of Speed & Precision, an introduction to the understanding the Body’s Natural Reactions during a Dynamic Critical Incident, understanding the integration of lateral motion, moving through a crowded environment, and additional concepts as time allows as they pertain to potentially lethal responses to a Dynamic Critical Incident in a House of Worship.

This Course will provide the student with an understanding of true Counter Ambush training with a defensive firearm, base level defensive shooting skills and a training methodology for continuing to develop those skills.

This session aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions and uphold ethical standards in challenging circumstances.

Classroom Training and Discussion:

Engage in a 60-90 minute session focusing on Mitigation, Pastoral Protection, Stage Management, Staff Involvement, and Guest Speaker(s). Through interactive discussions and insights, explore strategies for effective mitigation, safeguarding pastoral areas, coordinating stage activities, involving staff, and benefiting from guest speaker contributions.

Classroom Training and Discussion:

Join us for a 60-90 minute session exploring Carry Requirements, Concealed Carry Devices, Ammunition, Firearm Selection Recommendations, and Shooting Fundamentals. Delve into essential topics, gain insights, and discuss best practices to ensure proficiency and safety in firearm handling in case of a Dynamic Critical Incident on your church campus.

Classroom Training and Discussion:

In this 60-90 minute session, we'll cover essential topics including Defense of Self, Defense of Others, Defense of Property, and Use of Force. Engage in interactive discussions, scenario analysis, and legal considerations to enhance your understanding and preparedness in critical situations.

Classroom Training and Discussion:

Join us for a 60-90 minute session focusing on Natural and Man-Made Disasters, Community Assistance, and Action Planning. Explore strategies for preparedness and response to various emergencies, including natural disasters and human-made incidents. Discuss the importance of community collaboration and develop action plans to enhance resilience and mitigate the impact of disasters. Engage in interactive discussions to exchange ideas and foster preparedness within the group.

Classroom Training and Discussion:

Dive into a 1-3 hour session exploring Understanding the Event, Identifying Good and Bad Points, Effective Planning, and the Importance of Training. Engage in interactive discussions to analyze past events, extract valuable lessons, and develop strategies for improvement. Explore best practices, identify areas for enhancement, and foster a culture of continuous learning and preparedness within your organization.

Classroom Training and Discussion:

Participate in a 1-2 hour session covering Target Assessment, Threat Assessment, Vulnerability Assessment, Risk Assessment, and Mitigation Planning. Delve into the systematic evaluation of targets, threats, vulnerabilities, and associated risks. Engage in discussions to develop effective mitigation plans, enhancing your organization's overall security posture. Gain valuable insights and strategies to create a comprehensive risk management approach.

Classroom Discussion or Reality Based Options (2-8 hours):

Explore ALICE Training, a versatile solution applicable to any industry and organization size. ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) instructor-led classes empower individuals and organizations to proactively handle the threat of an aggressive intruder or active shooter event. The training goes beyond traditional lockdown approaches, offering option-based tactics tailored to various circumstances.

ALICE Training prioritizes protection and safety in the face of an active shooter or terrorist attack, recognizing the unique challenges across different settings. Tailored classes address specific concerns for K-12 Schools, Healthcare Facilities, Higher Education, Businesses, Government, and Houses of Worship.

ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training), affiliated with Texas State University, sets the national standard in active shooter response training, endorsed by the FBI. ALERRT and ALICE can be seamlessly integrated with mass casualty and triage scenarios, as well as law enforcement training scenarios.

Consider our armed response reality-based training as an additional option to enhance your team's preparedness and response capabilities.

Classroom Training and Discussion Option:

Embark on a comprehensive 3-6 hour Hands On Workshop covering Introduction to Medical Emergencies, Traumatic Emergencies, Triage, and optional components such as Building the optional Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK), CPR Certification, and hands-on training.

Gain essential knowledge and skills to respond effectively to medical emergencies, including traumatic incidents and triage procedures. Delve into the fundamentals of providing initial medical care and learn how to prioritize treatment based on the severity of injuries.

Optional components offer opportunities to enhance preparedness further. Build your Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) to ensure you have essential supplies for emergency situations. Obtain CPR certification to become proficient in life-saving techniques. Engage in scenario-based training to apply your newfound knowledge in realistic situations, reinforcing your ability to respond confidently and effectively in emergencies.

Classroom Training and Discussion Option:

Invite us in for a 1-4 hour session on De-Escalation. Participants will learn effective techniques to defuse tense situations and mitigate conflicts. Delve into strategies for communication, conflict resolution, and understanding escalation triggers. Gain hands-on experience through optional interactive simulations as part of Reality-Based Training, allowing for real-time application and skill development in de-escalation scenarios.

Range Training (One day or multi-day pistol and carbine options):

Immerse yourself in Intuitive Defensive Shooting along with Fundaments of Defensive Shooting, Red Dot Essentials, Defensive Accuracy, and Defensive Efficiency. Through techniques like Lateral Movement, Multiple Shot Strings of Fire, and Presentation from Concealment, enhance your abilities as an initial responder. Explore strategic use of Cover & Concealment and engage in scenarios simulating a 360 Degree Threat Environment. Elevate your skills with engagement from unorthodox positions, including scenarios in and around vehicles. Opt for Range Qualification if desired and take your proficiency to the next level.

    • Do we really need Church Safety and Security Team training?
      This is a legitimate question. We answer it like this. As a house of worship and a body of believers, a church provides spiritual comfort and guidance, as well as moral support but there is also a focus on meeting the physical needs of its members and guests. Part of those physical needs are the need to be able to come to a safe place. A sanctuary. A sanctuary is defined as "a place of refuge or safety". If your church is planning on meeting the needs of members and guests, physical safety is of paramount importance.

      Nehemiah 4:9 talks about the importance of physical safety "And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night.".
    • Do you offer Church Safety and Security Team training?
      Yes, we offer some very diverse options for Church Safety and Church Security training to address a variety of security concerns. We have more training options than any other company of our kind. See our Church Security page for more information.     • Is your Church Safety and Security Team training for ushers, greeters, and others?
      Absolutely. There is a big part to play for ushers and greeters and others who are on the front lines. These are the people who get the first look at everyone coming into the buildings on your campus. Training them and integrating them into your overall church security plan is very important.
    • Is your Church Safety and Security Team training for armed and unarmed security teams?
      Yes. We train both armed teams and unarmed teams. Most security teams we train are composed of both.
    • Do you do Church Safety and Security Team training scenarios?
      We provide scenario training for church safety and security teams. Depending on what your training goals are, we can do simulations and scenarios. This generally involves role players and your team members. Generally, we need to have some time training your team to a minimum level of proficiency before you jump into scenario based training. It is best described as a crawl, walk, run, run faster type of methodology.
    • Do you do Active Shooter training for churches?
      We provide active shooter, active killer, mass casualty training to churches and other organizations. We believe early detection and defense in depth are important segments of training. A church needs more than just offense. A complete picture includes education of team members, congregants, and staff; honest evaluation of facilities and team members' abilities, and realistic goals that include more than minimum standards and checking boxes.

      We have training teams that mobilize and can come to you for whatever kind of training you require to meet your goals. Depending on the type of training, we might need you to provide facilities and perhaps some passive role players. Check our Hosting Page for more information.
    • Are you doing Church Safety and Security Team training near me?
      We do training events all over Arkansas and surrounding states. Some of our events are private and not open to non-team members of those organizations. As teams get better trained, it's not unusual for us to build training to suit their skill level. We provide a lot of onsite training that is specific to the facilities or campuses that a team expects to operate in.

      We do have some open to the public events for for to attend. Keep an eye on our training calendar for those events and there is always the opportunity for you to Host us for a training event with other local churches in your area.
    • How much does Church Safety and Security Team training cost?
      Church Security training isn't cheap, but it may be less expensive than you think. There are a lot of variables involved. Pricing is directly correlated to what training you need, how many instructors we need to provide to achieve your goals, if ranges or facilities have to be rented, or special equipment must be provided.

    • Can you help our church with security procedures?
      We can give you an honest evaluation of where you need to start, what you need to do next, and how best to create a sustainable training methodology to meet the needs of your campus as well as protect your volunteers, members, and guests.
    • Do you have Church Safety and Security Team training courses?
      We don't have "courses" for church security, but we do provide training opportunities in the form of modules and custom built training applications. What we find is most church security teams are operating with a limited budget and need to be realistic with their training goals. Everyone and every organization has a limited amount of resources whether it be time to train, fiscal resources to fund training, facilities to train at or in, etc.

      What we see that works best is to set up a 1-2 day event and decide what are the most important things we can do first, or next. We can help you with those decisions based on where your team is based on previous (if any) training.
    • Can you recommend Church Safety and Security Team training equipment?
      We can certainly recommend equipment whether it's medical equipment, radios, firearms, video, facility security, and more. We will recommend equipment that we know works well and in certain applications, we can recommend places to get it or installers who can install it.

      We can also recommend how to train with your equipment in order to maximize the benefits of it. If you haven't trained realistically, then you really don't know that it works.
    • Can you help us develop a Church Safety and Security Team training plan with Standard Operating procedures?
      We can help you with several aspects of creating Standard Operating Procedures that would be beneficial to your campus, facility, staff, and membership.
    • Can you help train our Church Safety and Security Team for medical emergencies?
      Medical emergencies are the primary issues a church has to deal with. From simple incidents like fainting to critical incidents like stroke or heart attack, we can help train you to use the tools at your disposal to effect the best outcome possible.     • Can you train large and small church security teams?
      We can train all sizes of church security teams. We see many times that smaller churches reach out in the community to other smaller churches and do a combined Hosting event. Sometimes the smaller church will send its team member to a location where are offering an open to the public event. On occasion smaller churches see the benefit of a private training event that is focused on their facility with only their team members.
    • Will an insurance company indemnify our Church Safety Team?
      We have seen a lot of churches use Brotherhood Mutual as an insurance company to indemnify their team.
