So you would like to become an Arkansas Concealed Carry Instructor, but you don’t know exactly what that entails. Here is the definitive answer you are looking for. Becoming an instructor is not for everyone. You need to be able to not only shoot, but present the points of law and be able to instruct others on the finer points of becoming a better shooter. The Arkansas State Police require you to have the following courses.

~NRA Range Safety Officer:
This 1 day course develops NRA Certified Range Safety Officers with the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations. RSO candidates will learn roles and responsibilities of an RSO; Range SOPs; inspection; rules; briefings; emergency procedures; and firearm stoppages and malfunctions. This is the Range Safety Officer Course required by the ARKANSAS STATE POLICE to become a Concealed Carry Instructor.

~NRA Certified Basic Pistol Instructor:
This is a 1 day Instructor level course, but it does have some significant prerequisites you need to be aware of.

Pre-requisites are as follows: Must have a current NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT*) and complete the NRA Basic Pistol Course Instructor Led Training as a student.

The Instructor Pistol course teaches the instructor candidate how to teach the fundamentals of handgun safety, operation, and responsible ownership to new shooters throughout the Basic Pistol Blended Course or the Basic Pistol Instructor Led Training Course.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be certified to teach the NRA Basic Pistol Course or the Practical Exercises for the Blended Course to students. This Instructor course and the NRA Range Safety Officer course are the courses required by the ARKANSAS STATE POLICE for Concealed Handgun Instructor qualification. This course is required in Mississippi to teach Enhanced Concealed Carry. In Louisiana, this is one of the two required courses to teach Concealed Carry. In Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Tennessee, and Missouri, this is an authorized Concealed Carry Instructor course.

*The BIT will cover NRA policies, procedures, basic public speaking skills, training methods, use of a training team, training aids, organization and budget, and preparing to teach.

*********Please review the pre-course assessments. Expectations are spelled out for the skill set you need to have.*********

Once you get these courses completed successfully, you will qualify to take the ASP Safety Instructor exam. Here is the link to the ASP CHCL Application and Study materials: http://asp.arkansas.gov/services-and-programs/detail/concealed-handgun-licensing
